What is the “Song of the Sirens?”

In the Odyssey, a novel written by Homer, the Sirens sing a song so irresistible that none who hear it can escape. The bewitching sound was emitted by the beautiful women that serenaded the sailors from the deadly rocks that would destroy their ships if they drew near. Odysseus was so intent on hearing the sound that he was instructed to bind himself hand and foot to the mast of his ship and plug the ears of his oarsmen while they rowed by the jagged shore. Shout as he may the sailors were instructed that when Odysseus begged to be untied, to twist more line around him and stroke the oars harder until the hypnotic notes faded. The implication is that the song of the sirens has an irresistible force that cannot merely be heard it must be must be obeyed.

When seeking a stable name, Annika Bruggeworth wanted to convey the romantic and passionate nature of the undertaking and this powerful myth thoroughly encompasses that theme. In addition, the goal was to choose a name that started with a double S, like the company that makes the dream possible. Signature Smiles is the name that the Bruggeworths chose for their multispecialist dental practices in New Jersey of which there are five.

Dr. Scott Bruggeworth likes to tease about being one of those mythological sailors that were “lured by the song onto the rocks.” He complains about the tribulations related to starting a show stable, but he loves the excitement of the new venture as much as anyone. He also gets a thrill out of explaining the “secret” meaning behind the name of the stable.
